International biocontrols producer purchases California insectary to build grower support throughout North America

A global biological controls company has purchased a Redding, California-based insectary that specializes in raising beneficial and predatory insects used for natural crop protection and pest control.

Through its U.S. subsidiary, Biobest USA, Biobest Group NV, a Belgium-based company focused on pollination and biological controls, has acquired all shares of Beneficial Insectary, a large-scale, independent producer of beneficial insects and mites.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The two companies share a complementary commercial strategy and distribution model, and both will retain their identity, operate autonomously and continue to supply their respective customer base, according to a joint statement.

Meanwhile, Biobest USA and Beneficial Insectary will focus on operational synergies to secure a reliable supply of locally produced beneficials.

Beneficial insects and biological control agents produced through insectaries are widely used in cannabis production for both hemp and marijuana crops, as they allow growers and organic, preventative approach to integrated pest management in the absence of conventional crop protection options.

Biobest Group NV CEO Jean-Marc Vandoorne said the transaction is a “significant step” that fits the company’s strategy to supply high-value crop producers with pollination and biocontrol products and technical support throughout North America.
