University of South Florida researchers say CBD oil applied to strawberries can extend the fruit’s shelf life, potentially opening a new commercial end use for the hemp extract.
A new study published in Postharvest Biology and Technology says “CBD oil has promising potential as an antimicrobial treatment to fresh produce.”
USF researchers applied CBD oil to fresh strawberries and stored them at 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit for eight days and 50 degrees Fahrenheit for eight days. The results “showed that CBD oil was effective at maintaining the visual appearance of strawberries” compared to untreated fruit.
Researchers also found the CBD oil reduced the strawberries’ microbial load and inhibited yeast and mold growth.
