Recreational cannabis users in Connecticut have been shopping at dispensaries out of state — until today.

The opening of seven recreational cannabis locations marks the first time Connecticut residents will be able to buy non-medical products in their home state.

So what will this new market mean for dispensaries in Massachusetts, one of the first states to legalize the recreational sale of cannabis and a close neighbor for Hartford County residents?

“We’re not super concerned,” said Brandon Pollock, CEO of Theory Wellness, a dispensary in Chicopee, Mass. “We want every adult to have convenient, safe access to cannabis. So if some of our customers would rather visit a more local store, in the end, that’s better for the customer.”

Megan Sanders, CEO at Canna Provisions in Holyoke and Lee, Mass., said the Connecticut launch may actually benefit the company.

“I think what we have learned about cannabis states coming online, especially for adult use, we find that actually the customer base grows,” Sanders said. “We find that more people come because it becomes more acceptable because it’s legal in your home state. So we’re anticipating that more consumers will be coming to cannabis dispensaries in the region.”
