Rhode Island to open 6th marijuana dispensary: Here’s how much pot was sold in December

Recreational marijuana users and medical patients now have a South County dispensary to patronize.

Plant Based Compassionate Care, Inc., doing business as Sweetspot Dispensary, will open the state’s sixth retail marijuana dispensary on Tuesday, at 560 South County Trail, in Exeter, says its CEO Jason Webski.

The opening comes almost three weeks after recreational marijuana sales became legal in Rhode Island.

The company originally planned a dispensary in South Kingstown. But Webski said town officials raised concerns with its proposed location at 91 Pershing Ave., in the business district of Wakefield village.

“The town did not allow us to house and supply cannabis from that facility,” he said. “We had a lot of conversations and meetings and did our darndest to serve that community, but ultimately … we were pushing against a brick wall with that location.”

Webski said the company also wasn’t sure if South Kingstown voters would support a marijuana business in town. South Kingstown was one of 30 Rhode Island communities that put the question to voters as allowed under the state’s newly passed law legalizing recreational use.

Ultimately South Kingstown voters did support such businesses, but by then Sweetspot thought it best to invest in its Exeter location, which it had earlier considered, Webski said.
