New York City’s official CBD ban targeting food, drinks takes effect

New York City implemented a citywide ban this week prohibiting businesses from selling food and drinks containing CBD.

The ban took effect just a few days after New York state lawmakers passed a bill allowing for some CBD products but not settling a process for putting it in food.

After the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an advisory in December that using CBD as an additive is currently illegal, New York City’s health department moved forward with the ban, starting with a crackdown on restaurants using CBD as a food additive.

With the ban now officially in place, the city’s health inspectors will look for food and beverages containing CBD during routine safety inspections, the Daily News reported.

Businesses selling CBD-infused food and drinks will have to remove the products or face fines ranging from $250 to $600 starting Oct. 1.

Until then, health inspectors will embargo any CBD products they find during inspections.

Cities with similar CBD-infused food and drink bans include Los Angeles, Portland, Oregon, San Diego and Seattle.
