Hey there, before you start puffing on that HHC cart, it’s important to understand what you’re getting yourself into. HHC, or hexahydrocannabidiol, is a cannabinoid found in hemp plants in small amounts, but it’s also synthesized in labs in large quantities directly from hemp.

The legal status of HHC Carts

Now, you might be wondering if it’s even legal. Well, it’s a bit of a gray area. While HHC is not psychoactive like THC, and thus technically permitted under the 2018 Farm Bill, the fact that it’s often synthesized in labs puts it at risk of being banned by the DEA due to its Schedule 1 status.

But legality aside, what are the potential benefits and risks of using HHC carts? Let’s take a look.

Advantages of HHC Cartridges

Advantages of HHC Cartridge

HHC carts are a new player in the cannabis market that’s gaining traction. Here are some highly promising benefits associated with using them:
Potency: HHC carts are known to be more potent than traditional THC products like delta-8 and delta-9 THC. This means you could get a stronger, more euphoric high with HHC.

  1. More relaxed high: HHC carts can give you a more chilled and calming high, making them a good choice if you want to de-stress and unwind.
  2. Potential therapeutic benefits: Some users believe that HHC could have therapeutic benefits, including pain relief, mood enhancement, and improved focus.
  3. Improved taste: HHC carts are appreciated for their pleasant taste and smooth draw, making the experience of using them more enjoyable.
  4. Potential for increased creativity: Some users have reported feeling more creative and imaginative after using HHC, which could be beneficial for creative professionals.
  5. Pain relief: Research has shown that HHC inhibits pain transmission in mice, which suggests it may have potential for managing chronic pain.

Vaping HHC Oil vs. Smoking Flower: Which One is Better for You?

If you’re wondering which method is better for consuming HHC, whether it’s smoking flower or vaping oil, then this article is for you. Here are some things to consider:

  1. Health Effects: Vaping HHC oil is considered less harmful to your health compared to smoking flower. Inhaling smoke from combustion can be harsh on the lungs and can lead to respiratory problems, whereas vaping HHC oil produces a smoother and cleaner hit.
  2. Potency: HHC oil is reported to be more potent than flower, which means you may get a stronger and more euphoric high from vaping HHC oil.
  3. Quick Relief: If you’re looking for quick pain relief, vaping HHC oil may be a better option as it can diffuse into the bloodstream more quickly than smoking flower.
  4. Dosage Control: With vaping HHC oil, you can easily control the dosage by measuring how much oil you put in the vape. This reduces the risk of overdosing or experiencing toxic effects.
  5. Cost-Effective: Vaping HHC oil can be less expensive in the long run than smoking flower as you can use smaller amounts to achieve the desired effects.

While both methods have their pros and cons, vaping HHC oil may be a better option for those looking for a more efficient and controlled way to consume HHC.

Side Effects of Vaping HHC

While vaping HHC may provide many benefits, it’s important to be aware of its potential side effects. Some of the commonly reported side effects include:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Dry mouth
  • Increased appetite
  • Red eyes
  • Feelings of paranoia

It’s important to note that the side effects may vary depending on the individual and the dosage used.

A comparison between Delta-9 and HHC

HHC and delta-9 THC cannabinoids are two types of THC found in cannabis. However, they have some distinct differences:

  1. Effects: Delta-9 THC is known for its strong, euphoric high, whereas HHC may produce a more relaxed and calming effect. Some users have also reported feeling more focused and creative after using HHC.
  • Strength: HHC is said to be more potent than delta-9 THC, which means that you may require a smaller dose to get the desired effects.
  • Research: Delta-9 THC has been researched extensively, and its effects are well-known. However, since HHC is a relatively new substance, research on its effects and potential risks is limited.
  • Legal status: Delta-9 THC is still illegal on the federal level in the US, whereas HHC is legal in most states since it is considered a “hemp-derived” product.

It’s important to note that the effects of HHC can vary depending on the individual, product quality, dosage, and frequency of use. Always talk to your doctor if you are on prescriptions before consuming this cannabinoid.

HHC is a relatively new and exciting product in the cannabis market. While it is still being researched as a semi-synthetic cannabinoid, it is already gaining popularity due to its unique properties and potential benefits. HHC carts are reported to be more potent than products such as delta-8, making it a good option for those seeking a stronger high. At the same time, HHC is said to provide a more relaxed and calming high, making it a good option for those looking to unwind or alleviate stress.

HHC has also been reported to have potential therapeutic benefits, including pain relief, mood enhancement, and improved focus. Furthermore, many HHC carts have been noted for their pleasant flavor and smooth draw, which can make the experience of using them more enjoyable.

One of the advantages of HHC is its legality. While delta-9 THC is still illegal at the federal level in the United States, HHC is currently legal in most states, as it is considered to be a “hemp-derived” product. This means that more people have access to HHC carts than THC products, making it an increasingly popular choice.

Overall, HHC carts are a promising new product in the cannabis market that may offer a unique and enjoyable experience for users. As research on HHC continues, we may learn more about its potential benefits and risks, but for now, it’s important to use it responsibly and with caution.

The post A Guide to Cannabis Wax and “Dabbing” appeared first on The Cannifornian.

]]>
“Dabbing” is all the rage among high-tolerance cannabis consumers. The practice of dabbing is essentially heating a cannabis concentrate — often called a wax — to a very high temperature and then inhaling the smoke. This method can result in consuming cannabis that has a THC level as high as 90%.

Dabbing is known for the strength of its high, flavor, potency, and even the “ritual.” But wax can also be added to cannabis flower and smoked for a milder effect.

And dabbing is not limited to wax. Wax is simply among the more common and popular cannabis concentrates or extractions used in dabbing — and it has several subcategories.

Follow along as we break down some of the more popular wax subcategories — and a few alternative concentrates or extracts that are just as popular.

Cannabis Wax Production, Types

Waxes consist of cannabis plant material that’s leftover after being trimmed and sold as flower. A solvent like butane strips terpenes and cannabinoids from the plant material. This process produces a dense, sticky substance called wax that is exceptionally high in THC and sometimes other cannabinoids.

That wax can come in several forms:

Budder, Badder, or Batter

Earning the label due to its consistency, said to resemble cake batter. It’s thick and dense. It also usually has a golden color that resembles vanilla cake batter. Budder, Badder, and Batter are all accepted terms and spellings within cannabis culture.

Crumble

Like wax batter, crumble gets its name thanks to its physical characteristics: It is often drier and looser than other popular concentrates. The product is cooked in a vacuum oven for a long time, which helps reduce the risk of contamination by mildew or mold. It’s one of the most potent concentrates — often reaching that 90% THC mark.

Sugar

Sugar wax is said to have been an “accidental finding” as condensation and other environmental factors turned traditional wax into a concentrate that resembles wet sugar. Its color varies from a light shade of yellow to amber.

Other Popular Dabs That Aren’t Wax

Shatter

Named after its brittle traits — shatter is almost like a glass. It is typically some shade of yellow, and its production, while relatively new, has its roots in the ancient practice of producing hashish. It is cooked in a vacuum oven to make it more pure and crystalline.

Taffy, or Pull ‘n’ Snap

This concentrate is very close to shatter, but may be gooier or stickier due to the manufacturing process.

Diamonds

Diamonds’ solid and crystal-like appearance accounts for the name. They are technically isolates because they are the result of extracting only one cannabinoid (like CBD), as opposed to a concentrate derived from whole plant matter.

Rosin

Rosin is among the buzziest cannabis concentrates. Rather than using solvents like butane, heat and force of pressure are used to extract concentrated cannabinoids.

Live Rosin

Fresh cannabis (as opposed to cured) is frozen to manufacture live rosin. It’s then put through an ice-water extraction process and further refined using a press. It’s believed to be the best way to get a “whole plant” experience as none of the cannabinoids or terpenes get extracted in the process.

There’s a burgeoning marketplace of products containing live rosin — from candies to vape cartridges.

So whether you’re consuming budder, badder, batter, sugar, or crumble, you’re technically inhaling a wax. The differences between these concentrates and the others listed can get very complex and technical. Websites like Leafly and merchants like Attis Trading Co. are good places to dive deep into those differences.

Happy dabbing!

5 Lounges Where You Can Legally Smoke Weed https://mjshareholders.com/5-lounges-where-you-can-legally-smoke-weed/ Thu, 13 Oct 2022 10:45:14 +0000 https://www.thecannifornian.com/?p=21961 Weed is easy enough to find in cannabis-legal states. The post 5 Lounges Where You Can Legally Smoke Weed appeared first on The Cannifornian.

]]>
With cannabis legalization spreading like wildfire across the U.S., there’s one burning question for cannatourists who might be hitting a legal city like Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, or Las Vegas: Where can I consume the marijuana I just purchased?

Weed is easy enough to find in cannabis-legal states. The hard part: consuming legally and ethically.

Most legal states have rules saying cannabis consumption must take place in a private residence. And while there are “420-friendly” AirBnbs in many cannabis-legal cities, most hotels won’t allow you to smoke on premises. There also are strict rules in all legal states against consuming openly in public spaces—primarily due to federal prohibition.

Yet, progress is being made. Here are five lounges where you can legally smoke weed in the U.S.

Denver: Tetra Lounge

Making a place where people can freely and openly smoke cannabis has been a challenge in Denver since the city became the first in the world to fully legalize, regulate, and sell the plant.

New social equity licenses have changed that. Tetra Lounge, which dubs itself “Denver’s Premier Cannabis Social Club,” has been using a workaround method since 2018. That’s when it opened as a members-only cannabis consumption club. In March 2022, Tetra Lounge received the first social equity “hospitality license” in the state. And it’s taking full advantage of it with daily, monthly, and yearly membership options, plus board game nights and DJ’d parties.

The downside? You must bring your own stuff because Tetra’s license doesn’t allow for product sales. A 420-friendly hotel plans to open soon, too. But it has some hoops to jump through.

You can find Tetra Lounge in the Five Points neighborhood near the trendy River North Art District at 3039 Walnut St.

Chicago area: RISE by Green Thumb

Chicago and its home, Illinois, have a similar problem to that in Colorado. It’s straight-up illegal to consume cannabis anywhere but a private residence—with some difficult-to-navigate exceptions. But just in time for the 2022 420 holiday, a consumption lounge opened in the northern suburb of Mundelein inside a dispensary run by Chicago-based giant Green Thumb Industries

The RISE retail outlet not only provides a safe place to buy cannabis but also one in which to smoke it. The lounge includes Mario Kart stations, board games, big-screen televisions, and plenty of water.

The catch? You must make a reservation through the RISE website.

RISE is at 1325 Armour Blvd. in Mundelein.

Cannabis Cafe

Los Angeles: The Original Cannabis Cafe

You may not realize it while taking in the smells on the Los Angeles and San Francisco streets, but public consumption of cannabis is still banned in California. The state’s rules are more liberal than most. Still, you should plan on smoking in designated locations—like The Original Cannabis Cafe in Los Angeles.

Described by some as “Instagram-chic,” The Original Cannabis Cafe in West Hollywood is truly an original in the state that made medical marijuana a movement.

A “flower host” will walk you through your entire experience, including the option of ordering cannabis-infused meals in addition to the normal edibles you have in your pocket or the cannabis you’re smoking.

The Original Cannabis Cafe is closed due to COVID-19 but plans to open again soon, according to the company’s website.

Las Vegas: NuWu Cannabis

Cannabis consumption lounges and Sin City may seem to go hand in hand. But newly legal Las Vegas is facing similar obstacles as other states when providing safe, legal places for visitors to consume cannabis.

NuWu Cannabis, sitting on the Native Las Vegas Paiute Tribe’s land, has the city’s only consumption facility, which it calls a “tasting room.”

The venue has “an array of sanitized equipment to utilize for your smoke session, including futuristic devices like the Stündenglass Gravity Bong and the Puffco Peak,” according to its website. It promises to “elevate your Sin City experience with an extremely unique, stoney session in Vegas’ first cannabis lounge!”

You can find the 16,000-square-foot “superstore” and tasting lounge at 1235 Paiute Circle in Las Vegas.

San Francisco: SPARC

Chill out and consume cannabis in a friendly environment at San Francisco’s SPARC—a dispensary chain with five retail locations and a consumption lounge in a more accessible area of the notoriously expensive city. The 1735 Polk St. facility allows vaping but not cannabis combusting.

Leafly calls its consumption lounge “welcoming and relaxing.”

Long story short: It’s not easy to legally consume cannabis in the U.S. Many apartment lease agreements in legal cities like Denver even forbid its use due to federal law. However, if you know where to look, there’s usually a spot.

Vaping 101

Over the past decade, vaping cannabis has gone from a tedious process involving an expensive tabletop device to one of the simplest, most portable, and most discrete methods of consuming the plant. The sheer volume and available vaping devices can be overwhelming and confusing for your average consumer.

What Is Vaping?

Vaping is consuming cannabis flower or concentrate via a device like a Volcano or pen. These devices heat the cannabis to a temperature at which it vaporizes and is then inhaled. The plant or concentrate is never burned, so no smoke is produced.

Why Do People Vape?

Cannabis enthusiasts choose to vape for many reasons, but the most common is that it produces a more intense high. The plant does not combust, so no smoke is produced, leading many to believe it’s a healthier option. The smell is also less intense than smoking flower. In fact, it can be almost nonexistent, depending on the device you use. The newest devices like pens are discreet, easy to use, and offer consistent dosing.

What Do People Vape?

Flower is the most traditional and old-school product that people vaporize. More common now is THC oil extracted from the cannabis plant through a chemical process. Relatively newer cannabis concentrates like live rosin, an oil made in a flash-freezing process, are growing in popularity.

Regardless of the type of concentrate you use, vape pens are big business. Sales of the devices, or cartridges used with the devices, are seeing double-digit growth each year. People bought more than $2.6 billion worth of them in 2021.

What Do People Vape?

Here are three of the most popular types of vaping devices:

The Tabletop/Desktop Device

Before 2010, there was really just one way to vape: Tabletop (or desktop, depending on who you talk to) devices like The Volcano, released in 2001. These devices are comparable monsters next to the prevalent pens. And they’re expensive.

The Volcano itself is an 8-inch wide device that weighs more than 3 pounds and starts at $479.

Vaping with a tabletop device involves vaporizing dry cannabis flower through a convection heating process that can take up to six minutes. The vapor typically fills up a large bag you can inhale it from for an intense high.

Portable Dry Herb and Concentrate Vapes

Recently, technology has emerged that’s allowed for portable devices that work much the same way The Volcano works—except they’ll fit in your pocket.

Typically using either a convection or conduction heating process, these little guys quickly heat dry flower (or concentrates, like wax) to a vapor that can be inhaled discreetly.

An app typically accompanies portable dry vaporizers, allowing you to control and fine-tune the temperature at which you vape. The best will remember your favorite settings for each strain or type of product you’re consuming.

You can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $300 for a dry herb vape.

Vape Pens

Around the same time as over-the-counter nicotine vape devices like the Juul were taking off, the same technology created similar devices for cannabis. In fact, one of the most popular cannabis vape pens— like Pax—were developed by the same company as the nicotine-focused Juul.

These devices are the cheapest option and range from being designed as disposable products to high-end, thoughtfully designed devices with connected smartphone apps that, like the dry herb vapes mentioned above, allow for precise heat settings and remember your preferences.

Disposable vape pens are usually discreet and in the $25 to $50 range, depending on the brand, quality of the product, and the amount of cannabis concentrate. This can range from 35 mg to a whole gram but typically lands at half a gram. And while they’re often the choice of weed tourists and have a reputation for low quality, many now focus on terpene flavors and cannabinoid contents (CBD, CBG, etc.). Some are even made with the newer, terpene- and cannabinoid-rich concentrates like live rosin.

The most common vape pen consists of two pieces: a body (called a “battery”) that looks like a pen and a cartridge containing some sort of cannabis concentrate that screws on the top. Some pens require you to push a button before inhaling, while others turn on automatically when they detect inhalation. Most batteries are rechargeable using a USB connector.

Depending on the simplicity of the tech in the battery, they can range from $5 to hundreds of dollars. Meanwhile, the cartridges—typically 0.5 grams or a full gram— are in the $25 to $50 range, depending on the type of concentrate and quality of the ingredients.

Whether you want to go old school with a desktop conversation starter or are looking for a more discreet method to get that distinct vape high, these options will get you there.

Ready, Set, Toke: 10 Must-Have Cannabis Accessories for Summer https://mjshareholders.com/ready-set-toke-10-must-have-cannabis-accessories-for-summer/ Thu, 23 Jun 2022 18:44:57 +0000 https://www.thecannifornian.com/?p=21811 Here are the 10 must-have cannabis accessories that will make you the most popular person at the party and ensure your cannabis-filled summer is one to (hazily) remember!

The post Ready, Set, Toke: 10 Must-Have Cannabis Accessories for Summer appeared first on The Cannifornian.

]]>
Summer is right around the corner. The weather is getting milder in many parts of the U.S. And if you’re not already thinking about the shows, rooftops, trails, and festivals you want to hit, then, my friend, you’re already behind.

Are you like an increasing number of Americans living in states where cannabis is legal? In that case, those summer activities will involve weed—and perhaps a lot of it.

Here are the 10 must-have cannabis accessories that will make you the most popular person at the party and ensure your cannabis-filled summer is one to (hazily) remember!

A Plan

You’re going to be consuming intoxicating substances, quite possibly with people you don’t know very well, and in crowded or perhaps desolate spaces. Do you know where and when to meet up should you lose cell service? Do you have a buddy system in place? Do you have a ride-hailing app installed on your phone (and enough money on your credit card to pay for it)? Be like a Boy Scout and be prepared.

Mini-Prerolls

Two trends have merged to make the old-school, 1-gram joint a thing of the past. First, we’re still in the middle of a global pandemic, and nobody needs to be swapping saliva and sharing a joint. Second, the notion of “more is better” has finally evolved within the cannabis sector to a “gradual is better.” This has opened up the market to all sorts of low-dose products, and one is mini-prerolls. Essentially, it’s a premade joint containing a half-gram (or less) of cannabis. No muss, no fuss, no spreading germs.

A Vape Device

Not everybody wants to inhale a combusted natural substance into their lungs, yet they still seek the instant gratification of a smoked high. Plus, nobody wants to wait 45 minutes for that edible to kick in. Vapes are cheap, discrete, and getting better. With technological improvements, the cannabis extracts available for vape usage are more like a “smoker’s high” than ever before. Look for live resin or rosin cartridges at your favorite store.

Edibles

OK, maybe you have a friend who doesn’t want to inhale any substance into their lungs. And perhaps they’re a gluten-free vegan with a soy allergy. Luckily, there are countless edibles options that will work for just about any diet. And technology in edibles is improving, too—while most will still take a good half hour to kick in, some brands are advertising “fast-acting” effects that a user could feel within 15 minutes of consumption.

Photo: FluxFactory via gettyimages.com

Stash Box

Look: Weed might be legal where you live, but walking around smelling like a dispensary is just rude. And, let’s face it: It still draws unwanted attention from, well, let’s call them “certain authorities.” There are plenty of options—from bags to tubes and boxes that will hold your weed and keep that odor under control.

Beverages

First off, cottonmouth sucks. Second, cannabis beverages are all the rage, and they’re getting better, too. Many are delicious, and they leverage some of the same technology that edibles manufacturers are using to speed up the high. Having some regular old water is probably a good idea, too.

Snacks

Maybe stay away from the infused candies and pastries for this one, and have something quick to eat in case someone on your team needs it. There’s a fine line between the munchies and hangry.

Portable Bluetooth Speakers

You aren’t going hiking with some friends and smoking weed in silence, are you? Music is an integral part of the cannabis experience. But you already knew that.

The Right Bag

This all might sound like a lot, but it’s really nothing you couldn’t fit into a large backpack or tote. So, find your look at the right price range and remember: It should be waterproof and have lots of pockets.

Shades

You should probably have eye drops in that bag already, but just in case, keep those bloodshot eyes under wraps, look fantastic and remember that the future is bright.

With these 10 must-have accessories, you’re all set to have an exciting, ganja-packed summer you’re sure to remember!

Cannabis vaping startup Pax valued at $5 billion https://mjshareholders.com/cannabis-vaping-startup-pax-valued-at-5-billion/ Mon, 22 Oct 2018 22:30:48 +0000 http://www.thecannifornian.com/?p=17135

Passing a joint is becoming increasingly passe. Pax Labs Inc., a San Francisco-based startup that makes marijuana vaporizers, is now valued at $5 billion, said two people familiar with the company who asked not to be identified discussing the terms of a private deal. The company raised $20 million in its latest funding round, according to Pax Chief Executive Officer Bharat Vasan.

Pax, part of a rising tide of marijuana device companies, makes internet-connected vaporizers that allow users to control how high they get when consuming the drug. The company’s sleek devices look like highlighter pens or USB sticks, and are operated through an app. Vapers can tinker with the app’s settings to puff a thicker plume of smoke, or lower the device’s LED light to be more discreet when inhaling in public.

The product may sound familiar to anyone who’s encountered Juul, the wildly popular and controversial nicotine vaping company recently valued at $15 billion. That’s not a coincidence. Juul’s creators, James Monsees and Adam Bowen, also created Pax. The two companies split into separate entities, Juul Labs Inc. and Pax, last year.Pax devices are not pre-filled with marijuana bud or pods that contain marijuana-infused oils. The startup sells empty pods to other companies, which load and sell them to consumers through dispensaries in states like Colorado, California and Oregon, where recreational marijuana use is legal. The model is similar to the way Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. sells a proprietary machine that brews coffee from pods filled by bean growers.

In the past year, cannabis-related companies have seen their valuations soar amid an investor frenzy around Canada’s legalization of recreational pot. Publicly traded cannabis stocks, like Canopy Growth Corp. and Aurora Cannabis Inc., have outperformed gold and the broader market. Tilray Inc., a cannabis company that was backed by billionaire investor Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, now has a market cap of about $14 billion” that’s almost as much as drug-testing laboratory Quest Diagnostics Inc.

Despite keen investor interest, Vasan said the company only took a $20 million investment from existing shareholders in order to avoid giving up a substantial stake and becoming overly dependent on venture capital. “This is a deliberately small round,” he said. Pax’s investors include Tiger Global Management, Fidelity Investments and Tao Capital Partners.

Pax Labs was born out of the vaporizer technology company Ploom, which was launched in 2007 by Monsees and Bowen, two Stanford students. By 2012, Ploom sold its first vaporizer, the Pax, designed to steam loose leaf marijuana buds. In 2015, Monsees and Bowen released a highly addictive nicotine-only device called the Juul. Juul became a sensation among teenagers, and quickly drew the ire of parents and regulators around the globe.

In 2017 Monsees and Bowen split Ploom into distinct companies. Both work at Juul, and have no formal executive title at Pax. Vasan says Pax and Juul decided to part after it became clear that both companies faced distinct regulatory challenges. In April, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it would begin investigating whether Juul marketed its highly addictive nicotine-infused pods to teenagers. Marijuana, meanwhile, is still only legal in some states, and even those laws are murky.

“We want people to understand that we’re a different company than Juul,” Vasan said. Still, Pax’s small pool of investors is almost identical to Juul’s. When Pax and Juul split, Pax shareholders received stock in both companies, Vasan said.

Eat, smoke or vape: Teens not too picky about cannabis choices https://mjshareholders.com/eat-smoke-or-vape-teens-not-too-picky-about-cannabis-choices/ Mon, 01 Oct 2018 21:30:52 +0000 http://www.thecannifornian.com/?p=16858
There is no doubt that some high school students will try to get high. However, the ways they’re doing it might be changing.

A survey of more than 3,000 10th-graders from 10 high schools in Los Angeles showed that while traditional combustible marijuana is still the most popular method, kids are turning to edible and vaporized weed, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open today.

Because of L.A.’s size and diversity, the researchers said, the patterns of cannabis use they tracked provide insights about “a wide cross-section” of American teens. They found that 62 percent of students who had ever tried marijuana had used multiple kinds and around 8 percent tried all three forms.

Those findings were consistent with the impressions of Andrew G., a 15-year-old from the Washington, D.C., area. (Kaiser Health News is not fully identifying him because he is a minor.) While he doesn’t use marijuana, he guessed that more than half of his peers have tried it. He also knows people who have used it in all three forms.

“I feel like because it’s being incorporated in new ways — edibles, vaping — the stigma has been broken,” he said.

This attitude of wider acceptance and greater access worries researchers. “We are concerned about the developing teen brain, the potential effects on cognitive development, mood and exposure to cannabinoids and chemicals in these various products,” said Adam Leventhal, an author on the study and a professor at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.

Leventhal called this “polyproduct use” alarming for a number of reasons.

A major one is that the body processes these forms of cannabis differently. Smoking or vaping likely has a more immediate effect, while eating it takes a longer time for the body to process. Teens might not realize how much they’re ingesting, Leventhal said.

Also, “these novel products could be drawing in youth who could be otherwise be deterred,” he added, referring to a range of commercially available cannabinoid-infused products such as gummy bears and energy drinks.

If kids are consuming many different products, he said, it increases the potential risk for addiction.

“It’s a parallel issue. We definitely do see teens who use more different forms of nicotine and tobacco products are at more risk of addiction,” Leventhal said.

The study was a cross-sectional survey of 10th-graders in the Los Angeles area. It was conducted from Jan. 2, 2015, to Oct. 6, 2015. The location and timing of the survey was important, noted the researchers, because California legalized medical cannabis in 1996. In 2018, it became one of nine states to allow the sale for recreational use.

The findings, Leventhal said, could be an early warning for a trend that will only increase as more states legalize marijuana. Specifically, cannabis products appear to be gaining ground among teens compared with other substances.

Teen alcohol and nicotine use, for example, has been on the decline for years, according to Monitoring the Future, a multidecade survey conducted by the University of Michigan.

“It’s really a public health and policy success story,” Richard Miech, the survey’s principal investigator, wrote in an email. “In contrast, marijuana use hasn’t declined much at all in the past two decades.” He was not involved in the JAMA study.

Leventhal also highlighted a socioeconomic element in the findings.

Traditionally, kids who were in a higher socioeconomic bracket were at a lower risk of using marijuana, he said. That’s still true for traditional and edible cannabis, but wealthier kids were more likely to use vaporized weed, according to the study.

Leventhal thinks the popularity of vaping is pulling more kids and teenagers into marijuana use. It removes some of the common barriers that keeps kids away from drugs: there’s no telltale smell that would alert parents, no harshness in their lungs and a perception that it’s safer than traditional smoke.

“The same vaporizer could be used, teens can load in a liquid on one day with nicotine and the next day a liquid that has THC or another cannabinoid,” Leventhal said.

And then it might be harder for parents or teachers to detect kids’ drug use.

Getting caught with a bag of marijuana plants could immediately get a kid in trouble. But if a parent finds a vape that looks like a normal e-cigarette, or a package of gummy bears laced with THC, they might not realize what they’re seeing.
