PRESS RELEASE

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., March 27, 2019 – Three proposed ASTM International standards aim to support day-to-day security management of cannabis-related businesses. The standards are being developed by ASTM International’s cannabis committee (D37).

According to committee member Erica Rigler, one standard aims to include recommendations on video surveillance systems (WK61980) which can provide forensic evidence of crimes or other events.  A second standard outlines how to control access to certain locations and areas of the business property (WK61983). And a third standard aims to help detect intrusions on the property (WK61984), including recommendations such as a direct line to law enforcement for unforeseen events.

Rigler, enterprise security account executive, Invision Security, noted that the proposed standards will support both facilities where cannabis is grown as well as dispensaries. Property owners, landlords, dispensary owners, consultants, and general contractors could find the standards useful.

“The committee has taken into account requirements from each U.S. state, and also other countries,” she adds. “This will help to rectify the disparate security requirements in hopes of realizing a unified approach to the medicinal and recreational future of cannabis.” Rigler notes that the security and transportation subcommittee (D37.05) also plans to develop proposed standards that cover transportation and cyber issues.
