MI creates emergency hemp testing rules while states await USDA direction

Michigan regulators have adopted rules that create testing standards for farmers’ first crop of industrial hemp.
A pilot program was launched this year allowing for the growing and processing of hemp in the state.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) announced emergency rules that establish sampling and analytical testing methods for measuring the concentration of THC in the emerging crop.
The rules will be in place for six months and can be extended for an additional six months.
MDARD Director Gary McDowell said the rules will give growers time to proceed while waiting for federal standards from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
